University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna
Institute of Hydrobiology and Aquatic Ecosystem Management

Company description

The Institute of Hydrobiology and Aquatic Ecosystem Management (IHG) is part of the Department Water - Atmosphere - Environment (WAU) at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna.

IHG comprises an interdisciplinary team of scientists from the fields of biology, ecology, geography, agriculture, history, landscape ecology and landscape planning as well as water- and environmental engineering. The primary focus of research and education is on fish ecology, aquatic ecosystem modelling, riverine landscape analyses and planning, bio-geo chemistry as well as benthic ecology.

Fields of activity

  • Research and teaching focus river protection (from anthropogenic pressures as e.g. residual flow, hydro peaking or pollution)
  • ecological planning (e.g. fish ladders, structural improvements, ecological construction supervision)
  • environmental impact assessment
  • river renaturation and restructuring
  • classification of rivers according to their ecological status (development of methods, standardisation, expertise)
  • taxonomy (fish, benthic invertebrates)
  • autecology of aquatic organisms
  • species protection
  • fisheries (electro fishing and fishing methods, fish population evaluation, fish ecology)
  • aquaculture
  • river typologies

Tasks in the AIM project

BOKU is leader of WP5, this work package aims at:
  • Support the Alpine Space Programme in the preparation of the 2014+ project generation, from the identification of project's weak points, assessment of relevant policy actors & institutional competences, the state of art of policy coordination at transnational level in the topics related to water and energy, and mapping through a web-GIS which are the European/national and regional programmes with possible synergies for the defined thematic field.
  • Sum up the outcomes raised from the previous WPs. In particular on the basis of panel discussion findings (WP3) and on the results of the WP4 activities, the partnership will propose to AS Programme a guideline for setting the scene for the project generation 2014+. The continuous communication with the stakeholders (WP2) is the main pillar of the project, and it helps to understand and identify the AS needs (WP4): starting point for setting the scene for the ASP (2014-2020).
